The Best of Both Worlds
I absolutely LOVE having a huge family...my Iban side of course...(I have, like, two cousins on my American side of the family and I don't even know where they live now). Eight of my relatives from Sarawak are staying with me at my house for five days...my very own jungle folk.
I'm used to cooking dinner for two, but tonight I was forced to make a feast for 10...Oh, Me, God...it thought I was gonna pass out from the heat emanating from the stove. It was craziness...the visibility in my kitchen was about 50% because so much STEAM was rising from the various dishes being fried up simultaniously in different frying pans. There wasn't enough room on our dining room table for the entire Lubon clan!
So, our dining room table area was rapidly transformed into a…well…dining room MAT area. I must say, tonight was the very first time I have eaten on my dining room floor, rather on the table. It was slightly strange but familiar at the same time…whenever I go back to Sarawak, we ALWAYS eat on woven mats on the floor.
Nothing compares to sitting down, chattering in Iban and eating a wholesome meal with close family. I’m so thankful to have been blessed with “the best of both worlds.”
