My super nice neighbor has a “little” oil palm plantation where he grows a wide variety of Malaysian fruits including the infamous Durian fruit…so tonight, to my taste bud pleasure, I found two large durians placed ever so delicately next to the front door…appropriately placed OUTSIDE the house due to the fact that my mother absolutely HATES the smell of durian… Durian is my favourite fruit in the whole world so I was elated to come home to such an unexpected surprise.
Anyways, mustering all the strength I had left in me (after a long day at shoot), I decided to hack open my tasty door gifts- for the inexperienced durian handlers out there, do NOT try this at home, on your own, with a sharp knife...don’t do it I tell you.
So I’m eating away..yum yum…and my dog chelsea, who is like vacuum cleaner with food, comes over to check out what I’m eating. I thought, why not see if she’ll actually eat durian…she eats everything else in the house ie. Bread, salsa, kuih lapis...and now….I’ve discovered another human food she would consider a “treat”…the durian. I was so excited about this discovery that I proceeded to feed her two or three large pieces…got some on her nose too!
My dogs sometimes sleep in my mother’s room…so when I went upstairs, the dogs were already in her room and she said,
“Yuck! Lydia, I can smell durian! Did you eat some tonight?!” and I was like, yes mom I did…but I washed my hands and face…and she replied,
“ Ew! I can still smell it in my room! It’s disgusting! How come it’s so strong?!”
I had to hold back the giggles…because I knew it was because Chelsea was at the foot of her bed!
There is NO way I would have told my mom I fed the dog durian…she would have disowned me immediately…if you know my mother and how over-the-top she can be about hating durian…or can imagine it…you’ll be laughing too…she's a total drama queen when it comes to the scent of this magnificent fruit.
It's true, no matter how long you live outside the country of your birth (26 years), there are indeed some things...you never ever get used to... posted by Lydia
